Open Weekend Dig

ISLIP, NORTHANTS

Settlement site.

Saturday 22nd - Sunday 23rd November 2008

09.00 – 16.00 both days

We have had many requests to re visit this site, some of you may remember we visited here for the CS 2007 Summer rally, and the site was blinding, with lots of Roman coins, some people who worked methodically and slowly had between 30 and 50 Roman bronzes a day.

There were 5 items of treasure recovered from this site along with Celtic, Saxon, Medieval artefacts and coins.  This of course does not mean finds are going to jump in your pouches, they still have to be worked for as usual.

This site will make a change from the sticky clay we have been digging recently, as it is up on a ridge and is made up from sandy soil, this site is has some areas of mineralisation and iron stone, certain areas are noisy as you would expect from a settlement site do not simply write these areas off as iron these are areas of heavy use from settlement, your detectors will need to be backed off or your sweep speed reduced to combat this, but for those seasoned detectorists amongst us we all know these highly mineralised areas are the places to be for finds, providing you work at them steadily.

We are have secured the 3 main productive fields for the weekend, some of the fields around the rest of the site may be available, or may not as the farmer is starting to deep plough these this week.  One of the large productive fields has already been ploughed and drilled,  the other 2 fields where all the Roman and Celtic finds came from is rotted stubble and voluntary re growth.

You may see evidence of recent detecting on stubble area of the site, this was from my own visit where I was recently doing field tests on a mineralised site with the E-Trac.

There is some camping available but as always no water and toilets on site, if you wish to camp please ring Gill on 07949821226 to confirm things.
